College Do's and Don'ts

10:00:00 AM

Hello everyone! Recently I filmed a video pertaining to three things you should and three things you shouldn't do in college! Each "tip" has seriously helped me so much during my first year of college and I've learned way more than I ever thought I could in less than 12 months! So, I'd like to help all of you out who are in college and share the 3 really important "Do's" and 3 really important "Don'ts" in college :)

DONT:
1. Buy brand new textbooks
Fortunately, I did my fair share of research before I started college and came across slugbooks.com. So I never had to overpay for my textbooks! Basically, you take the ISBN issued for each of your class textbooks, enter them on into the search bar in slugbooks, and slugbooks shows you all of the websites that sell or rent your textbooks - that way you can see where it's the cheapest! This was honestly such a lifesaver. My first semester I needed a math book which would have been well over $200 but thanks to slugbooks I was able to BUY it (not rent it) for NINETEEN DOLLARS. Check it out and save SO MUCH $$$.

2. Blow off class
This should honestly be a no-brainer, but still every semester there's always those couple of people who HARDLY show up to class! You're PAYING for these classes, why would you not show up? Also, some teachers actually give attendance points which means EASY points just for showing up! So definitely, definitely, get your money's worth and attend class! Get those easy points and understand the lectures. From experience when I miss even one day of class I show up to the next one and it feels like I missed an entire week's worth of information. Don't put yourself so far behind!

3. Put off studying
In high school, I hardly had to study. Only now am I realizing that high school was easy because we were taking things at such a slow pace... not in college. In college you only meet about twice a week (depending on the class) so everything you learn is at a faster pace (more reason to not miss class) and you're given double the information, sometimes more! So don't put off studying for the night before a big exam, that's so much information to try to remember! Instead, dedicate AT LEAST an hour after each class to go over the material and really, truly, study it. Everyday. By doing this you're more likely to actually LEARN the information vs. just memorizing it for a day and a half then brain-dumping it after the exam. Make things easy on yourself and learn the information the DAY its presented and keep studying it!

DO:
1. Talk to your professors/participate in class
Talk to your professors, ask questions, be present AND attentive in class. Go to office hours even if you don't really need to. When professors see that you take their class seriously and that you CARE about their class, they're more likely to be a lot nicer to you and more willing to give extra chances at points should you need it. Become friendly with them! You may also need a letter of recommendation some day and they're more likely to be willing to write one for the students who actually showed effort and appreciation!

2. Extra credit
Do the extra credit, even if (especially if) you don't need it. You lose NOTHING and gain so much. A lot of teachers also give extra credit for merely visiting a museum or a seminar - you can learn so many interesting things and get extra points at the same time! Seriously do the extra credit, you're going to thank yourself during finals week when you realize that every little point (yes, every single one) mattered - and all those extra ones will hopefully provide a bit of cushion for you!

3. STAY ORGANIZED
This should have been number one. Staying organized is by far THE MOST important thing you should be doing in college. Stay on top of due dates and assignments and always have a plan of attack. Sit down every Sunday (or whenever) and plan out your week. Take note of what is due and what needs to be done - DON'T WAIT LAST MINUTE FOR BIG PROJECTS. The more organized you are the more likely you are to finish everything that needs to get done and then some. Save yourself the headache of finals week and the entire semester, actually, and keep a planner and a pack of post-it's on hand at all times!

I really truly hope that all these tips help you guys out! Have an awesome school year and have lots of fun! College is definitely the time to explore all the possibilities and to find something that you have a true passion for and DO IT! XOXO.
